At the Peninsula Humane Society in San Mateo, Veterinarian Elizabeth Roberts ties off the vessels that supply blood to the ovaries to “honey” a 6 month old female pit bull mix. It’s a process of an ovarial hysterectomy, which removes both the ovary and uterus during the spaying process. Eight Bay Area welfare organizations are offering free spay and neuter surgeries for pit bulls and pit bull mixes as part of the fourth annual “Bay Area Pit Fix”. The goal is to help curb over population of the breed of animals. The poor reputation of pit bulls and pit bull mixes sometimes makes these type dogs the least adoptable.
